Abreaction (Catharses, Emotional Regression)

Emotionel Regression, dansk

Definition

Abreaction has traditionally meant bringing up strong emotions from the past so they can be felt, understood, and worked through without collapsing into psychological regression, meaning a temporary slide into an earlier, less organized way of feeling, thinking, or coping.

In Integrative Self-Analysis, abreaction is not treated as healing just because emotion becomes intense. ISA does not assume that “letting it all out” is beneficial. If emotional activation becomes too strong and a person loses clear thinking, the process can turn into psychological regression rather than integration. The goal is to feel the emotion as fully as possible while still keeping enough self-awareness and cognitive stability to stay oriented.

That is why ISA treats an abreaction as a negative event that only binds the Malignant Complex into identity further. ISA uses a more structured and carefully regulated process. A trained ISA practitioner helps the person stay grounded by:

  • Co-regulating as an Enlightened Witness and holder of a more stable ego position.

  • Instinctual and Cognitive Coherence: Asking simple, stabilizing questions that keep reflective thinking online while the emotion is active. This allows the person to feel and think at the same time, rather than being swallowed by the emotional state.

When done well, strong feelings become something that can be experienced instead of merely repeated. The emotion is no longer only relived. It becomes more understandable, more integrated, and less likely to push the person into automatic psychological regression.
