Affect-Bridge
Affekt-bro, dansk
Definition
Affect-Bridge is an ISA process in which a present emotion is used as a pathway to older unresolved emotional material. Rather than forcing memory through analysis alone, the person follows the feeling itself, allowing body-state, image, and emotional tone to reconnect present experience with earlier pain in a regulated and meaningful way, instead of abreactions.
Why it Matters
The Affect-Bridge supports communication between the Instinctual Consciousness (IC) and the Dominant Ego Personality (DEP). The Instinctual Consciousness (IC) often carries older emotional truth in feeling, sensation, and symbolic form before egoic cognition can organize it clearly. The Affect-Bridge helps the DEP approach that material without reducing it to abstract talk too soon.
For that reason, the Affect-Bridge is one of ISA’s clearest examples of bottom-up work. It assumes that present emotional activation may contain a pathway to unresolved earlier material and that real integration often begins by following the feeling rather than over-thinking.
